Two CSX trains derail in New York State, Amtrak service affected
WEST FONDA, N.Y. – Two CSX trains derailed around 8 a.m. today along the former New York Central near West Fonda. According to reports, the trains involved were eastbound train Q364-25 with four diesels, 122 loads and 4 empties, operating between Indianapolis, Ind., and Selkirk, NY., and westbound train Q641-27 with two diesels, 65 loads and 18 empties, operating between Selkirk and New Castle, Pa. Early reports indicate train Q364 derailed due to a sinkhole, and Q641 went into emergency to stop short of colliding with derailing Q364 and derailed, tearing up track crossovers.

According to the Montgomery County sheriff's office, 20 cars and several diesels were involved in the derailment, but no hazardous materials were involved, although there was some leakage from diesel fuel tanks that was quickly contained. The derailment closed State Route 5 in both directions.

Amtrak has cancelled Empire Service trains west of Albany but is providing alternate transportation. Spokesman Cliff Cole tells the Albany Times Union that the passenger railroad is setting up a bus bridge for passengers on the Lake Shore Limited, trains Nos. 48 and 448, between Buffalo and Albany today.
