I would like Hotwater to jump in and correct me or offer feedback, because he's the go to guy and THE source here on the forum!! My impression of CSX is that they as a railroad don't know who they are. I feel like they are confused, have no identity and just kind of lumber forward. Some railroads seem to have a mission, a goal and a way to do things. And it seems like some railroads like to have fun along the way and make it known. Union Pacific acts like this, so does BNSF to a lesser degree. I feel like Norfolk Southern kind of rediscovered railroading under Wick Moran and that they have made it enjoyable and are proud of their company, etc... I think it was the Heritage Units that really conveyed that to the public and those outside the railroad.
CSX seems to be unsure of itself. Sometimes I wish they would choose a name that is more charming, and has some meaning. But I think CSX could certaInly do something, the donation they made to help preserve that ACL Pacific really surprises me. So I'm hoping when the 30th anniversary roles around there will be more surprises. At the very least they can take a locomotive and put several heralds on the side for their 30th. Kind of like the Burlington Northern "Pacific Pride" which had 5 logos on its side.
As for the B & O Museum I had a conversation with one of the higher ups who manages volunteers there a while back. It was when the Trackers were there in 2012. I asked him if they were going to add a SD40-2 to their collection and he said they had no interest. The only modern diesel the museum has expressed interest in is the Chessie System Gold GM50 unit. He said they are struggling to preserve what they have and don't want more. Some stuff that CSX gave them they turned around and scrapped, as he defined it as junk. I asked what it was and he didn't elaborate.
So that's all I know....
