We had very high winds yesterday that resulted in a tank car and a covered hopper being blown off the CSX bridge and into the river.  Two covered hoppers are still on their sides up on the bridge.  The empty tank car floated East of the rt 40 bridge before being pulled out of the river.  The hopper was pulled out between the CSX bridge and rt 40.  A work crew is on the bridge working to clear the 2 hoppers on their sides.

Here are some more facts and pics, courtesy of THE AEGIS Newspaper.

Q409, a mixed freight headed to Richmond,VA., derailed on the x-B&O steel truss bridge over the Susquehanna River. The bridge is single track and is 1of 4 large bridges spanning the Susquehanna within 1 mile between Havre De Grace (Harford Co.), and Perryville, MD. (Cecil Co.) (I-95, US 40, the x-B&O bridge, now CSX, and the famed x-PRR drawbridge, now Amtrak NEC).
Several cars derailed on the bridge, and at least 4 more were blown off their wheelsets into the river.

2 of the cars that went into the river were buoyant enough to float to the Perryville shore along Frenchtown Road, and were removed.

I was on the I-95 Bridge once when a microburst hit.  Canvas covers were blown off truck loads,  Vehicles shaking up & down.  Mrs RJR still shudders when she remembers it.

That I-95 bridge (and another one nearby) was closed Friday into Saturday after two tractor/trailers overturned due to high winds.  Not at all surprised to read about this...

The bridges in that area span roughly 1 mile of the Susquehanna River below.  And I'm sure it was the longest, white-knuckle mile for drivers riding on them yesterday (Friday) in the storm.

70 stray cargo containers pose threat to mariners off North Carolina

PORTSMOUTH, Va.— The Coast Guard is warning mariners of navigation hazards after about 70 cargo containers fell off of a cargo ship Saturday night, about 17 miles off Oregon Inlet, North Carolina.

The cargo ship Maersk Shanghai contacted watchstanders at Sector North Carolina’s command center via VHF-FM marine radio channel 16, notifying them that they lost approximately 70 to 73 cargo containers due to high winds and heavy seas.

The Coast Guard urges all mariners to transit this area with caution.
