Tomorrow, just announced on the night(ly)(mare?) nooze, travel for assorted vague reasons not including tourism are

allowed to Cuba.  I used to see mention of old American steam still working on sugar cane trains, etc. I wonder if any

of that still exists, and what gauge rail lines were....a hodgepodge of gauges or?  Steam still there?  No chance I will go there....a long list of world wide destinations are ahead on that list. (don't leave any religious literature in your room)

Pretty much the only steam active in Cuba is now on tourist operations.  Cuba has gone from more than 200 sugar mills to less than a dozen quickly and diesels power what trains they do run.  However, some old mills and communities have established tourist trains that typically run for tour groups.  The status of these change rapidly.

They actually went from 127 to 58 plants after hurricane Mitchel in 2002.

I was at one last week in Progresso and the locomotive #1518 below is American made 2-6-0 and 98 years old. We went on it for a 45 min ride to the nearby town of Cardenas. During the plant tour I saw about 20 or so German and American made locos on the site ... they told me only two are still running. Here are some pics

There also are videos on steam operation.

Hi Bill • Thanks for the ride. When I was kid I used to go to Cuba with my Dad on business trips.
Like to go back.
• Cheers from Michigan
