I know lionel has the new version/x mth. as far a the running mechanics. the motor gear drive ect. is this model more robust than a new lionel version.

the more I see problems with the new lionel one. the mth one looks better and better. I am just wrong? other than the legacy sounds and higer price am I missing somthing?

I'd agree 100%. The Lionel L1 uses a single RS385 motor (same one used in twin motor diesels) with a worm shaft permanently attached to the motor. The MTH L1 has a big, fat, 9343 Pittman with a separate worm shaft. No comparison. The MTH L1 has a mechanically bullet proof driveline that makes more torque.
