I need some clarification on something I was trying to remember. When the SP4449 left Portland in 2009 to head east to Trainfest it had some issues with grease or bearing or something and that first day of travel to Spokane could only go 45 mph. Hot Water I'm pretty sure you were crewing at the time so in you can please clarify what happened and why. Thank you

NOTHING "happened"! Sure don't know where/how you heard THAT crap, but we pretty well maintained track speed of 60 to 65 MPH, except for service stops at Wishram and Pasco, and occasional rain meets.
Are you possibly thinking of the time 2472 had to run backwards for too long and too fast and damaged the main axle bearings?
I think that was the PLA pacific. 2467?

I think he was thinking of when Texaco changed there lube oil in 2006 or 2007 and the 4449 had to replace the Babbitt.

Nope. Texaco changed the formula of their JournalTex HD57, way back in the 1980s. Thus, we began using a much higher grade of lubricating oil designed for pressure feed, large diameter babbitted bearings. The main driver was removed after having one of the crown bearings run hot, on the doubleheader trip with UP 844. The babbitt was replaced, and the axle journals refinished. That "event" had nothing to do with the lubricating oil.
Besides, the original poster was talking about the trip to Michigan, in 2009, which we were NOT "limited to 45 MPH".
