Do you need to have a computer hooked directly to the DCS module?

No. The only time a computer is needed is if you want to upgrade the software in the remote and in the TIU.
[EDIT:] Yes, as Bob notes below, also for changing sound files in locos or if you want to store the settings that you have in the remote, either as a backup or to clone a second remote.
No, unless you're going to download some sound files.
My layout is upstairs and I have to bring the necessary items downstairs if I want to download a file. For running trains it's not needed.
Markkl25,
Depends on what you are doing, for running your layout no, for down loading yes. What are you trying to accomplish?

FYI, the remote is never directly connected to a PC.
When transferring sound files, upgrading remote software or backing up the remote's contents to a PC, the TIU is connected to the PC, and the remote is connected to the TIU.
I wasn't trying to do anything yet just wondered because alot of the pictures of layouts seem to have a computer in very close proximity. My computer will not be moved to the basement where the layout is but I do have a laptop I can take down to do anything needed. I was also wondering if The DCS O Gauge Companion will have all the info needed for wiring being my copy will be arriving tomorrow.
I bring my laptop to the layout when I have to do a procedure requiring it. When installing your TIU, be sure to allow adequate space to access the computer port. As Barry notes, that is the only connection point, even if you are making changes to the remote.
The O Gauge Companion should have all the information required for anything to do with DCS. If you have a problem finding coverage on some aspect, or understanding it, just post an inquiry and Mr DCS (Barry) will answer it.

There's an entire section devoted to wiring for DCS from scratch.
