D'OH!-Charlie-Stupid (or how Charlie came to purchase a new DCS system).

This morning I had one of those D'OHHHHHHH! moments. The new MTH PS3 engine I just bought (this actually started on Thursday) first didn't want to  run at all. Then I figured out how to reset to conventional and it wanted to run on the layout but the horn, then the bell kept constantly sounding. Sometimes I could get it to move, sometimes not. I worked perfectly on a test track on my bench with a Z750 and IR remote. My conclusion was PS3 did not like my MRC 027 Dual Power unit. I know the early units were problematic with Proto Sound and other sound systems. So I chalked it up to that. I also wanted to be able to play with the couplers and other stuff so I purchased a Remote Commander. Thinking I could hook this up with my Z750 brick, put a toggle switch in and run this engine via the remote, and switch that loop back for the other engines. Well the remote didn't work. Then thru some emails I came to the conclusion, (as after the fact the prev owner told me) this was run under the full DCS system. So engine id is not #1 anymore. He didn't even know what I was talking about when I asked him if it was reset before he shipped it. And as you may have read, I asked questions about DCS and my other engines, and went on to order a DCS system.

But it still bugged me I couldn't use this nice 270 watt transformer. Well the mule in me decided to clean the track and give it another try. No response at all. Then I went D'OH!.............. The power unit is under the table top and my grandson loves to mess with stuff. There is a switch to put it into program mode. Yup you guessed it. Now normally (like this morning) when in program mode an engine will not respond at all, (as if track is dead). But he may have moved the switch slightly so it was between positions. I was able to duplicate this and sure enough that engine acted like a retarded squirrel.  In the PROPER position the engine has been making loops for about 45 mins now, preforming flawlessly. D'OH!...........Charlie..............is STUPID.

And as Paul Harvey would say "And now you know...........the rest of the story"

Another thought popped into my head. Maybe there were outside forces at work here. Forces from "The Dark Side". All designed to get another reluctant soul to join their ranks and "Come Over To The Dark Side".

I mean, had the engine worked out of the box, had it worked on my layout, (with my power supply), had it worked after I reset it to conv, had it worked with the Remote Commander, had it worked properly under any of those conditions. Well I would be just another one on the fence, just thinking about, wondering if I really need, should I spend the money on, a full blown DCS Remote System.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm Does make you think though.

I also tell my wife some of my purchases are "forthe kids". I've bought Rudolph sets, for nieces and nephews, a passenger set for 1 daughter, Navy and Coast Guard for another daughter, NY Giants stuff, for my son...
But... expecting US to believe you bought DCS, because your grandson "did it"...... im writing that down, in my layou plans notebook. Im sure it is guaranteed to work, every time!
Maybe the DCS is returnable?

It's the weekend. I can cancel both orders. They haven't charged my card yet. Will not until they ship items. But ask me if I actually, seriously considered it. NO. So it just goes to prove that I was looking for an excuse to purchase it. Now if I am cornered about spending the money............."Charlie (my grandson) Broke It! So I had to get a new one."............

Now if you use this and it works...........I'll gladly take the credit for thinking of it.

However if backfires...........I'll accept NONE of the responsibility............

Deal,

But, I'm sure we both get the same eye roll, every time we "need" a train.
