The default Chuff Rate setting for a diesel is 8, as in 8 RPM levels.

Proto Chuff left in the AUTO position will increase RPM levels as the engine picks up speed and will decrease RPMs as it slows on. In the OFF position the user increases/decreases RPMs manually.

At least I think that's what I found the last time I tinkered with those settings.

Thank Goodness I wasn't the only one to overlook chuff rates for diesels.

However, the actual tip in the user's manual suggests setting 8 will leave the diesel permanently in level 8 .  So after years and years of neglect I changed the rate to "9".  Now I have a constantly elevated volume of straining engine noise--so realistic that it scares the heck out of me!  No I don't really like the effect, but I can't seem to get it back to where it was originally!  The manual also seems to suggest that once the user manually increases or decreases revs that the previous setting is removed.

Does anyone actually know whether the correct default value to operate the diesel sounds as realistically as possible is 9 (as 1 through 8 are suggested to trigger only that level).  Or 8 as catnap suggests.  Or some magical other digit on the list?  Later today I will investigate the Proto Chuff setting I may have and what effect turning it off does have.  Will the wonders ever cease?

Just when I thought the excitement of new discoveries was over I finally discover how to control couplet slack--sometimes on some engines at least--along comes this new challenge.  I am getting too old for such system shocks as these.

Cajon Pass may never sound the same!
