I suggest the following as a simple first step:  Turn off the remote.  Open the battery case.  Apply a DC voltmeter to the battery pack, the + at one end and the - at the other, so that you read the voltage of the 4 combined.  It should be about 6 volts if you have alkaline, about 4.8 if you have NiCad or NiMH.  Without removing the voltmeter, turn on the remote.  What happens to the battery voltage?  It should not drop substantially.  If it does, there could be either short in the remote or one battery is bad.

If it drops only slightly, I suggest trying to reload the upgrade.  What happens?
