Yes the copper wipers are missing  for the outside rail pick-up. Looks like there's only one small piece  left and it's hard to tell if anything is hooked up to it. There a better pic in the archives of what it's suppose to look like in one of your posts.

Actually it's not in the archives but on this thread a few posts above this one.. This is what the wipers should look like. Hopefully one truck looks like this.

It's a 2-rail engine and the tender wheels on each side are insulated from each other.

There aren't, and shouldn't be, any wipers on Ross's tender's trucks.

where does the engine get it' s outside rail pick-up?.  The wheels on one side still could be insulated from the wipers.   This pic is from Ross's engine??

I believe that the two truck pictures are each from a different truck on the tender. Only one truck having wipers is fine. Further, one wheel side is isolated from the axle since it's a 2-rail engine.

After considerable discussion with Ross on the telephone last evening, we determined that the engine simply wasn't getting power or it was dead. I suggested that Ross first try giving the engine power via alligator clips right off the TIU output, since we determined that the TIU was, indeed, putting out power.

If that didn't wake it up, I suggested that Ross take the engine to a local dealer for evaluation.

how can I check the engine if I have it on a table with the power supply and the TIU? I have 2 alligator clips I could use I tried putting one on the roller and one on the outside wheel but nothing happens?????????????????

As I said last evening, if it didn't work with one side of the wheels, try the other.

Regardless, try each wheel in turn until one gets the engine powered up. Keep trying until you've tried all of the wheels. Each time you connect a pair of wires, you have to then press READ to see if the engine is found by DCS.

As I also told you last evening, if DCS cannot find it at all when you press READ, using the pickup roller to the red TIU post and each wheel in turn to the black TIU post, take it to someone who can test it.

I am going to return it to MTH for service

I was told by MTH that I need to replace a battery in my train? The train has been sitting for a couple of years not being used, I didn't know it has a re-chargeable battery.

How do I replace it?

Hobbytown is ordering me a battery for my train and I will have them install it, hopefully I should be running again.

This does not sound at all like a dead battery issue.

It doesn't matter how many times you show the response. My considered opinion is that it's wrong, most likely because you didn't correctly describe the symptoms that you're seeing. Period.

I'll tell you again - you need to take the engine to a shop that can properly evaluate what is the problem.

   Have MTH replace the battery with a BCR and you will eliminate your battery problems all together.

Ross.  get your dealer to look at the engine and get it running.   It's not a battery problem.. Proto-2 engines will actually run in command mode without a battery..   I know it's frustrating but the engine has some serious issues.

 Your right it doesn't have  battery in Proto 3 sound, MTH repairs said 3 months for repairs? What options do we have?

Absolutely Ross.  GGG  is one of the best.... Anything I need repaired goes to George and I have to deal with Can & US  customs. Go for it.

When I do track set up it says add TIU track I put in TIU 1 then it asks 1;variable 1 or 2;variable 2 I thought it should be on fixed TIU track  

DCS says check track I did that?

I think I will sell MTH Chapelon ( 20-3388-2 train,DCS remote w/TIU and brick MTH Transformer.
any offers?????
