I'm about to plunge into DCS. I have read about the various revisions of the TIU, "Rev L" being the latest. Is the Rev labeled anywhere on the retail packaging? I would like to ensure I get the latest version at purchase.

Unless MTH Has changed the TIU's packaging, the only way to know the TIU model is by inspecting the TIU itself.
to add to Barry's comment,
if you see the USB port, it is a "L" version. You may not need to remove it from the package to see that?

I'm going by memory and I believe it's in a clear plastic cover (package) inside of a box with a window once you flip the lid open. I can't remember if you can see the USB port or not?

No, it's not.
I believe that Joe's remembering the way the DCS set comes in a "clamshell" type of box with a window on the inside. However, the whole exterior of the box is typically sealed.
When was Rev L released?
How will we be able to tell the difference between the New Rev L's (released in the last 2 weeks) that have the updated zener diodes and 6.1 software from previous Rev L's

Tplee, I suspect by opening the TIU and inspecting the board. I would guess that they haven't labeled that on the boxes. 
I have a "new" one purchased yesterday that has been modified but they still say Rev L. Surprised they didn't have a different Rev letter.
