I don't know if this idea has been discussed here before.  I apologize if I am treading on old ground, but I just heard about this and wanted to share.

Based on a tip from an Internet article, I asked my dentist today after my cleaning if he had any old tools around that were to be disposed of.  He left the room and came back with a good thirty or so dental probes, pokers, scrapers and other jabbey things that he was happy to hand off.  Said he had never been asked for retired dental implements before but was happy to donate them to my model making efforts (just don't pretend to be a home dentist with them, he said).

These are very high quality, heavy duty instruments that are absolutely better than anything from the tool store.  As long as you don't mind their bloody legacy, I highly recommend a trip to the dentist.

Hopefully they were sanitized before he gave them to you. I still would be rather leery about using a sharp object that was used prior to poke around in someone elses mouth, as Hep C and the aids virus are difficult to kill.

i would reccomend soaking them in straight bleach for a few days before taking a chance and poking yourself with them. imho

Those are precisely what I have uaed all along (even though the picks do seem to give me a viscious li'l poke every once in a while, esp. if I'm not attentive when reaching for them in my tool box.) I bought mine new, however, at an Army - Navy Surplus store in Cortland, NY when visiting there.

My dentist has been saving and giving me his old instruments for years. He does sterilize them before he gives them to me.They are still taped up in the sterilizing pouch.

A 30 minute soak in 10% bleach plus 30 minutes in boiling water will render the instruments completely sterile. This will completely kill the toughest of pathogens (Hep.C,MRSA's,HIV etc.)
