Some lighter Lionel boxcars from the 80’s with light duty couplers derail when reversing into a siding. Should weight be added? What is the best way to do that? The boxcar doors open so I can easily insert something and hide it inside.

Check out the NMRA recommended standard for O Gauge car weights. Also, try a SEARCH on the OGR Forum for car weights, as it has been discussed many, MANY times.
I use wheel weights. They are flat and have adhesive to hold them in place. Go to a tire shop and ask. They might even give you old ones and you can just glue them in.
Weighting my rolling stock to NMRA standards was the single best thing I ever did to improve operations on my layout.
Derailments simply stopped.
