I want to build the 2 train magic electrol layout in the 1941 catalog. I have the 168 controller, the 1663 switcher with the 2201T tender, and the 1666 engine & tender, but I have no idea how to wire it up. Thanks for any help.

You won't be able to with a 1663. You need an engine, such as the 232 with the Magic Electrol reverse unit. It used the DC pulse that normally triggered the whistle to trigger the reverse unit. A normal E unit was triggered by a brief break in the voltage to the track.
The 1663 is the CORRECT locomotive for MAGIC ELECTROL. It was part of Outfit #1061 cataloged in 1940-41. Wiring is very, very basic, one wire from the transformer goes to the 168 Controller, the other terminal on the controller is connected to the "Lock-on". The other wire from the transformer is then connected to the other "Lock-on" terminal.
The 1663 is controlled by pushing the "Train No. 1" button.
FWIW There were four locos that were capable of Magic Electrol operation: 201, 232, 233 and 1663.

Thanks Ron, Very simple hookup.
Seafold, The 1663 is the correct engine. Look at the 1941 catalog.
My mistake. I thought it only was the 0-6-0 switchers.
