Did an apple green Lionel Standard Gauge 408E ever come with freight cars?

Yes. 1928 or so Outfit # 410E, had 211, 212, 213, 214, 215, 216, 217 in it.

Thanks, Rob. I appreciate the information. The set did come with the  216 hopper and the red/green 217 caboose but are not in this photo. 

Wow - 408E looks great in Apple Green with the freight set.  Might aave to get one. Congrats on a very nice set.

Yes as Rob had stated it was in the 1928 catalog and was featured in the 2 page centerfold. Hope you got it at list price of $75. Very nice purchase....enjoy.

Rich- Thanks for the catalog pictures. I paid a bit more than 75.00 for it but still got it at a reasonable price. 

75.00 was a lot of money in 1928. You could have bought a brand new 1928 Model A Ford roadster for about 350.00-400.00. 

Thought I would share a couple of pictures of the 408E set laid out just like it is shown in the 1928 catalog. With the exception of the engine box, this set is really complete and clean. The engine even has a couple of its original flags still remaining. The wheels and the pickup rollers show hardly any evidence of use or wear. One pantograph is broken and one headlamp is missing, but other than that it is really nice. It came from the family of the original purchaser who bought it new in Philadelphia and was kept by the family until I got it at the estate auction. I guess that makes me the second owner. When you lay this set out end to end, it's 9 foot length is really impressive.
