It's possible, but not necessary.
Check the parts list(s) for the 2243 and order the corresponding metal gear to replace the broken nylon gear.
I believe that did change over from nylon to metal in the early 1980's. For example, I have a GGI from the late 70's with nylon, and another GGI from 1981 with metal.
MPC went to metal gears in later years. A metal replacement gear should be easy to fine.
MPC used the same power truck on a number of engines. Replacing the gear should not
be too hard or just replace truck with a truck with good metal gears. The parts are
not hard to find at hobby shops or train shows. You may have to call around.
Paul, contact Lionel they have a metal replacement set for that.
TM actually did a segment in Lionel Nation 7 about replacing the motor truck of some MPC engines, like the F-3's, EP-5's, and the Virginian E-33. The benefit is not just replacing the plastic gears with metal gears, but also gives the engines Magnetraction equipped axles. It's just a matter of removing the truck frame on top from the MPC truck and placing it on the postwar version.

If you see that as a benefit...
The dual motored Fundimensions F3s with traction tires - like the New Haven 8851/8852/8864 set, were some of the best pullers ever.

What is their number?
Lionel's number that I have is 586-949-4100 and they will take good care of You.
That number isn't working, it just says it needs a one and an area code.
I replaced the MPC trucks on my Virginiaan rectifer with a post war power truck.
Easy replacement and world of difference in operation.
That number isn't working, it just says it needs a one and an area code.
The 586- part of the number Larry gave above is the area code.
So you'd dial 1-586-949-4100. Need to do that when dialing a number that's outside of your service's area code (long distance calls).
The 586 area code and the number is all wrong, they are in North Carolina now. If you need a truck with meetal gears, email me in my profile...
