No, as we designed the layout to accommodate the largest articulated locomotives available.
a couple of close calls today
Has anyone ever taken a DDA40x around that curve?
(I designed my 'test track' to accommodate the overhang of one)

Why go through all that angst?

I don't have "angst". I use Maker's Mark.
was that a dummy engine behind the big boy
yes it was, that was the inaugural run of the 4014 rail fan tour
John S, any idea if a BB will clear a 0-128 bridge with hand rails. Just asking.

That figures, as any steam operations on the UP, since 2011 have always had a diesel MU'ed with the 844. Thus, the 4014 is following suit.

as soon as I try it I will let you know Jack

you talking about the diesel or the guy with the remote?
Your a O gauge guy cant be a dummy, talking about the diesel. That looked like a MTH model was it.
A Big Boy looks great pulling anything, even passenger cars.

no....my layout was designed and built right the 1st time. bet that a scale bb wont make it on most of the layouts we see in ogrr mag.-jim
I am looking forward to trying it. Should be ok. All the other big articulateds make their way around the layout.

Oh boy! Oh Big Boy!

it was a Lionel SD40T dummy
Nope, as I'll get the BB before I build the layout.
No doubt different loco's swing out more than others. I found that out years ago on tunnel portholes on a curve. It was just fine for the JLC Big Boys but the first time I place my Vision Line Challenger on it there was a no go! So out came the
dremel tool to shave off the sides to make it pass through.
First pass on any big Articulate or big long diesel or extra long freight cars you'd better make it a slow one.
those challengers are the best for making portal clearance, just sharpen the front edge of the elephant ears
When I built my layout, I laid out my #1 mainline with my JLC Big Boy on the track and trying out each ten foot section as i completed it, to make sure the loop was "Big boy capable." I'm certain that JLC BB is basically the same size, etc., as the V BB. Many years later, the Big Boy will still fit on the mainline, but to run it I have to remove three or four buildings, two tunnel portals, and about eighteen million trees in my forest. So, Idon't run it much, since it takes over an hour to do all that and then another hour afterward to put it all back.
