Like C.W. said, plastic diesel shells as in the Postwar models with diecast parts. Diecast for steam. Plastic for freight cars, as I probably have only a few locos that would pull many diecast cars, and there's also the coupler strength, as others have mentioned.
Heavy die cast Steam Locomotives are an absolute must for me. ABS plastic diesels on die cast metal frames suit me just fine. Virtually all of my rolling stock in both freight and passenger cars are plastic and over the years I have been content with them. I have the Lionel die cast freight cars produced back in 1991 and I like them a lot. I would be interested in picking up some of the K Line die cast hopper cars.
No brass steamers for me. Yes, great detail, but wimpy weight and too darn fragile. And when you do add weight the detail parts break off that much easier just from handling. To each his own.
I like my diecast rolling stock but don't pull more than 13 cars in a consist. I like the way they roll and handle. My layout is pretty level, which makes a big difference.

Lot of Plastic cars but I have gotten a lot of die cast cars lately. I will by either or as long as there are metal trucks and wheels.
