Does anyone know what's required to build a controller basically from Radio Shack parts? I've a PA with very little knowledge how to tune up (my background is O gauge) and no horn/air chime controller.
Anyone ever do a build? Thanks

It would probably be a lot easier to find one on Ebay or at a train show. What is the number on your PA?
The only thing that really goes wrong with them is the vibrator contacts will sometimes pit and stick together. Cut the can open and file the contacts smooth with a point file then adjust the contacts for the loudest sound. Then tape the can back together.
There is no way I have heard of to make a solid-state controller for the Gilbert horn. There are so many Gilbert controllers available there has been no need to make them. You should get a good one for less than $15. Lionel's contoller will not work as the technology was different. Ebay is an easy answer.
Commonly the speaker in the engine is burnt out, but there are a number of sources for replacement units and they come with instructions to do the work. I suggest Portlines Hobbies at http://www.portlines.com He could probably supply the control button with its non vacume tube also.
