I have an early version Lionel Diesel Sounds Boxcar. It puts out only the first level of sound and does not "rev up" as the train speeds up. Any suggestions as to how to restore the "revving" sounds?
The revving is made by a magnet on a wheel passing a sensor mounted on the truck, which is connected to the sound circuit board.
Check to see the magnet is on the wheel and also the sensor has not possibly shifted. Also check the sensor wire is plugged solidly into the circuit board and is not loose.
If everything checks out, then either the sensor or main sound board may be bad.
I investigated and found the round magnet firmly positioned on the axle. I found two unsoldered wires and reattached them, one to a pickup roller and one to the piece atop the magnet. There was no change in the car's performance,,,one level of diesel sound. The horn and bell work OK.
