A lot of the loads carried by Schnabel cars are rather simple shapes - big round castings or transformers (basically a box), etc. It is easy to scratch build some veyr convincing ones: large reactor vessel from 2.5 or 3" PVC and some fittings, a transformer is a just a big box with a few panels and round plates on it (as shipped), etc. Google image some pictures to get an idea.
I took the armature out of a motor from a Reznor garage heater. That will become a flat car load some day. It would also work on a Schnabel. I also kept the outer winding from the same motor, also for a large load.
