Larger speakers have worked for me for all of my sound systems. But it needs to be the right kind of larger speaker. Check your manufacturer's specs on impedance, then get a speaker with rare earth magnets. These are more expensive, but the volume and sound quality are better.
Also, is this for steam or diesel? Steam needs a speaker that has good low-frequency capability, as steam engines tend to produce lower pitch sounds than diesels.
Thanks will systems uses 8 ohms and will do both steam and diesel
The larger the speaker the better the sound will be. You can also wire multiple speakers in the system. 2 - 4 ohm speakers in series will give you 8 ohms and 2 - 16 ohm speakers in parallel will give you 8 ohms. Have you tried turning up the volume with the volume CV?
Hi Matt, thanks will try the above either bigger speaker or the combo you said, Digitrax doesnt reccommend full volume on that speaker as it is only 1/4 watt but did increase it to about 75 percent on that cv. in addition to the s gauge hudson i put a digitrax 465 board in a railking pa no sound yet it it old speaker 8 ohm is that speaker to large to hook up the sound bug to
If the system is 8 ohms, any 8 ohm speaker designed for o scale should work, as long as it's good for at least The 1/4 watts Digitrax specifies. If you can see the flat end of the speaker, the wattage should be printed on there.
Is the speaker mounted in the fuel tank? That also effects sound quality.
ok thanks for the imfor great help the speaker is in a s gauge hudson the diesel has the digitrax 465 havent added the sound bug to it but the speaker is in the fuel from the ps1 system it use to have
