Are you talking about an LED? I use the dirt common 1N4003 diodes for most of my lighting diode needs, more than sufficient for the task. You'll need a series resistor for an LED as well.

And they fit my primary specification. Hard to find anything cheaper ! Here is an ebay seller who has 200 for $1.59. Count on a month or two for them to arrive. I recently ordered some electrical parts on AliExpress from several sellers and all arrived in eight to fifteen days That is faster than I am accustom to for eBay orders from china. j
How about for an incandescent bulb that is wired in parallel to the DC motor leads so that the back up tender light only comes on in the backwards direction? Would the same 1N4003 diode work for that?
