Saturday, April 11, 2015 we went to the Great Scale Train Show in Timonium, MD. It is a very big 3 1/2 acre show. 85 percent of the show was HO. 10 percent was N, G, and Z. O gauge was merely 5 percent. It looks like the HO's have taken over most of the shows we have attended lately. Is that an important sign? Where are the dealers? Is it because O gauge is bigger and therefore more work to load and unload them for the shows? We will be attending the big York, PA TCA meet in a few weeks. if this is the trend of shows to come, what does this mean for OGR's. If York turns out to be a large HO fun fest, I think we will stop going to shows. Oh, also, we only saw one layout display for O gauge. Many for HO. Thanks for letting me vent.

that show has always been an h o show. since the guy that puts it on is, umm h o ......you should have known better....-jim
They had an all scales Brass Expo as part of this show did you visit that?
There is usually a lot of O narrow gauge at most shows. On30 is very popular. I guess that you were looking for narrow gauge because you posted this on the narrow gauge forum.
O 2-rail standard gauge is nearly invisible unless you go to an O gauge show.

I attended the show. I would estimate that O gauge was more like 10%, but the show was large enough that we still spent 5 hours there and got some nice buys and enjoyed the many display layouts.
Their April and June shows are smaller, the October and January shows are quite large.
While the GSMTS (Timonium) has always been predominently HO & N, I don't see much chance that TCA would go that way.

4/12/15 Myself and 2 friends drove down to the show from Pittsburgh. We started our trip at 5am and I got home at 9:30 pm. We had a great time. We have done this trip many times and we always ha several things that we bring home. I got two Premier covered hoppers for $23.00 ea. A Railking gondola for $10. A nice tank car for $15.
One friend got 2 premier cars I know he paid $27 for one and I don't remember what he paid for the other. My other friend got several books a ton of scenery supplies.
Yes when we were there in Jan the show was larger.
We like making this trip because we find things that we can't always find in Pittsburgh.
I never have a bad show I always find things to bring home. I look at Ho items because you can use Items that are HO with O gauge for details. Loads for in Pick ups Etc.
I look at the layout for ideas. Trains are Trains . What a Great Hobby.

Nothing new there - been like that for as long as this show has be done. It's an all scales show so you get a representative cross-section.

Since it's not a trend, and was normal for that show, it doesn't mean or change anything.

I don't think a train show that is a lot of HO have much impact on OGR. I went to a all scale show in Anaheim las JAN. More G scale at that show than any all scale show I had ever been to, Made sense......So Cal could be a year round G scale outdoor layout. Doesn't mean HO is on the way out.
The funny thing about model train shows is you most often notice the stuff you didn't come to buy for some reason.
I have gone to local train shows and have talked later with people and I've had this conversation before:
Him: So, did you buy anything at the show last week?
Me: Not much. All is saw was 3-rail, N and HO stuff, not much of anything I could use.
Him: Are you nuts? All I saw was standard O scale narrow gauge stuff, N and three-rail!
Me: Yeah, but you model HO...
Him: Yeah, and you model On30...
Me: ... Yeah. Good point.
I see the HO as most of the open shows I go to, but you will not have that problem at
York..but the opposite....there will be some HO there, but most of it will be Lionel and
other three rail, Flyer S guage, and, of course, standard gauge. It is quite refreshing.
I would not worry about THAT happening to York.
