Has anybody out there in our train community had the need to disassemble a K Line plane. I want to make up a flat car ( 2 actually-one with the plane's fuselage and the other with the wings/propeller) and want to remove the torso of the pilot. There seems to be two tiny screws holding the front of the fuselage which, if removed, would allow the rest of the plane to be split in halfs-but I am not sure. Anybody with any experience(s)-thanks in advance, turtle 7.  Also-most Lionel, MTH, Kline small plane flat cars have the propeller attached to the body-I presume that they were not transported that way-anybody with any knowledge of what a propeller crate might have looked like?  Thanks again !!

I can't help with the model disassembly. However there can't be much to it and I doubt you wouldn't destroy it especially if there are screw holding it all together.

As far a transportation goes, I do happen to know something about that. Propellers would most certainly be removed before being transported. The unit would not be removed and stowed as a complete assembly. The blades would be removed and loaded into crates. Sometimes there are crates made just for the particular blades for that aircraft. That is the case on military rotor winged acft. There are special storage boxes made just for the blades. The ones we use are made of aluminum with mounts on the inside to hold the blades in place. On our aircraft the main rotor hub is left in place in most cases. Some antennas and lights are also removed to prevent damage in transit. On a model, any kind of wooden crate would pass for a propeller crate as long as the dimensions are close. You could even put another small crate on there to represent the box that other small items that were removed for transport are stored in.

The planes I'm familiar with usually have one screw in the bottom of the wing to secure the wing to the fuselage. The other edge of the wing is usually held in place with a slot and tab arrangement. Pulling the fuselage apart is a bit dicey. The halves are held together with 4 press fit steel pins. I would pull the wing off, then try a very fine flat tip screw driver or putty spatula in the area hidden by the wing. Alternately work the front and back edges to gain separation. Be patient! There is usually 1 pin just ahead of the elevators (tail), 1 front and 1 back of the cockpit, and 1 up near the front.

As Mike said, propellers go in crates.
