Discerning BCR or Battery PS2.0

Without removing the shell, is there a technique to determine if there is a BCR or a battery in the PS2 unit? I have some difficulty starting up my J1e Hudson; it seems to want to be "coaxed" into full startup.

It was built ~2000. If it's battery, how often and for what time do I have to run it?

If it has a white battery it's probably time for a new green MTH battery (looks like a 9v battery) or BCR.
