Do any of you have an idea about why Lionel discontinues popular items?

Current catalogs don't offer the 0-6-0 Docksider in any livery.  These were never blown-out, and given prices on the auction site, they maintain their popularity.

How about the series of diecast 40' flatcars.  Sure the PS-4 flatcars are nice, but they are too long for small layouts.  The 40' flatcars sell for list price.

What's with the North Pole Express Diner Car.  That production run must have been about 1/4 of the demand.  I knew I was in trouble when Charles Ro was out of them during the year they were introduced.  I've seen it sell for $80 to over $100.

I'm a bit surprised about the Docksider. I have two (North Pole Central and Reading) and love them. Great runners, and (comparatively) cheap. I have a few ideas (probably obvious) though:

  • Sales slacked off (market saturated), so they want some demand to build back up before another run
  • Damaged or worn tooling and the cost to deal with it is greater than would be made
