I have a Lionel 60, 50, and 51 that I am working on.  They seem to run well, but after 2 or 3 minutes of running the metal cylinders where the bushings and bushing springs sit get so hot they almost burn my finger when I touch it.  The other parts of the motor are not even warm to the touch.  I can't imagine that this is normal, but with all three doing it, I am questioning it.  If it is not normal ( as suspected) any ideas on what needs to be changed?  I have already replaced the springs and bushings with brand new ones.

Any help would be appreciated.  I love to see these little ones going around the track.

I have been waiting to see what other folks have to say.

If you haven't done so already, I suggest you read the thread linked by NICKAIX.
I am not certain when they crept into our supply stream, but many of the replacement brushes out there, including those sold by Lionel, have excessive resistance.  The more resistance the hotter the brushes / holders will get.

I check the resistance of every replacement brush before I use it.

For many years I would replace original brushes as a matter of course when I serviced a used train for the first time. When purchased in bulk, they were just too cheap to leave the old ones. Now that the quality of the supply is in question, I am less likely to do so.
