So, I was looking at the MTH auction, and noticed that there is a non-powered calf unit...with pickups.

This made me wonder if any of the bigger name brands ever made a powered calf unit.

As I haven't found any web links referencing any such beast, I am asking here: Do powered calf/slug units exist?  Why would a non-powered calf unit have pickups? (They can be clearly seen here.)  I didn't see any lights on it.

Thank you!

The features list makes no mention of marker or number board lighting, so that's not the reason. It might make an interesting project to power one, but clearance for a vertical can motor looks like it would be too tight.

i wonder if the catalog picture was rendered from the cow engine, which of course would have the pickups visible. And it's just an oops?

The reason being ... the MTH calf units have headlights ( they are tiny ).   I own two and the headlights work fine but are tiny just like the ones in an SW type switch locomotive.  I've never known any 3 rail calf units to be powered.  Powering one would make for a good project though.

Thank you very much!!  I really appreciate having this question settled in my mind!
