Hello guys and gals..........

Do the EMD NW-2 small diesel switchers have marker lights on the front between the headlight ?  I seen the Lionel Postwar, MPC and LTI NW-2 switchers have them even the Williams NW-2's have them too.  The MTH Railking, Atlas NW-2's don't have them so who's correct ?  My Railking "Southern"  NW-2 does not have them go figure !!!  Is it possible to add LED marker lights to the Railking version ?

Lionel did away with the front markers on their stamped chassis NW2's during the '60's.  Even headlight lens' were eliminated in an effort to cut production costs.

Hello Bruce

I remembered I had a Lionel #634 and this one is bare bones single axle drive and all the trim on it was left off or eliminated. It was truly a piece of JUNK !!! but I didn't care as I was 7 years old and it only pull about 4 plastic cars that was all as I grew older then learned to do repairs on it.  I brought up this topic because last week I purchased the Railking NW-2 and compared to the Lionel #634 on ebay pictures and boy !!!!!!!!! the Railking version is so far superior to the Lionel one !!!!!  light years ahead in fact.

I have a Williams Seaboard NW-2 that I knocked the fake markers out and put in LEDs.  I also converted it to DCS with a strobe light on the roof.  Many have seen this and asked me to do an article on the forum.  I can do this if I catch up on my work. The twin motored Williams is a real good locomotive.  I think the poster wanted to say on the side of the headlight.  I also put in an LED headlight and backup light.  Being a toy train guy, these little projects are fun.

Not an issue to add markers to the RK locomotive.

One must wonder why when business gets tough the boardroom geniuses make decisions that render their product even less desirable?

I know of no real NW2 with markers.  That does not say some railroad may have added them.  I will have to ask Rich Melvin as he is the railroad expert that should know the exact answer.

Tiffany, over the years many of us have added markers to engines that do not come with them.  Your engine is very easy to do.  Do not use an electric drill.

Good idea! Since you will not believe me, that EMD did not deliver any switchers with CLASS LIGHTS. The addition of marker light brackets and their associated electrical "plug-in connection" is a different story. But, Rich should be able to help you more.

As I remember...

Standard Code of Operating Rules...

A train is a locomotive with or without cars displaying proper markers and operating according to the rules.

Markers:

That would be CLASS LIGHTS. "Markers" are on the rear of a train or locomotive running light.

WHITE - extra train

GREEN - another section following. Can be more than one section but last section displays no markers other than RED on rear end.

RED - rear of train

Close.. the white, green  are class lights.

Makers indicate the rear of a train .

A single engine running on time table schedule could have green  class light (a section) and red markers on the tender indicating the rear of the train..... Not likely but certainly legal.

Yard engines do not display class or marker lights.   A road switcher or weight freight that goes  out on the main line would have to display markers on the rear of the caboose.  He's probably running as a EXtra so he would display white class lights and white Flags on the front of the engine. Doesn't matter what type of engine.

Tiffany, I do not have that engine in front of me on the couplers.  Most early RK had a coupler slide switch that opened the coupler in the direction the arrow next to the switch pointed at.  I will hit your post later.  If you can not get it to fire, do a feature 18 reset and see what you have.

Hello Marty............

how can I do a feature 18 reset ? I cannot hear the bell, horn or clinks noise while doing a reset ? I REALLY LOVED this switcher and more than willing to go a long way to fix it.

Hello Marty.........

I would NOT DARED to use a drill for this, the drill will mess up the shell !!!!  I would like to install marker lights ,green LED's

Tiffany

This Weaver E8 has the markers added, as part of an extensive EOB upgrade and motor change.

A pin vice/drill bit, smaller than needed, to start, and then two more drill bits, until the desired size.  Patients is most important.  3mm LED's are may be a bit too large. You want the LED to press fit/snug in the hole.

Two lead, bi-directional, LED's were used.  Red one polarity, Green reverse polarity.

hello Marty

That is way cooooooooooool   What kind of green LED's I can use for marker lights as I can HAND drill 2 holes for that.  I would like to add them to my NW-2.

Tiffany

Jim, an electric drill will heat your plastic and you stand a good chance of the hole not coming out smooth.  I have done lots of this work and choose to use a hand held twist drill.  You can control the speed you cut into the plastic.  Unless you have a great hand you may also have an electric drill hop across your work and cause bad damage.

Tiffany you can use the MTH green LEDs or get them from any source.  Evans design has everything you will need.  The Evans set comes with the resistor built in and you just hook one wire to hot (rollers) and one to ground.  I have them saved and will look at what you might want to use.

Nope.  No "markers" (classification lights) on the southern NW2's:

EMD NW2 2271

EMD NW2 1058

However, there are brackets on the corners of the hood and cab to attach class lights if needed.

Rusty

Hello guys and gals............

I found one Southern NW-2 with the marker lights but it on TOP of the hood (looks kind of funny place for it) http://www.railpictures.net/photo/345775/ check it out.  Marty's marker lights look good on his Williams NW-2 I would like to add green LED's on my NW-2 just like Marty's
