Rod, first off, you need to do the last step: add 1 + 8 = 9

Also, for the math oriented:

1. 'x' is my number

2. 3x is the result of multiplying by 3

3. 3x+3 is the result of adding 3

4. 3(3x+3) = 9x+9 is the result of multiplying by 3

Now, where we're at is this: 9x+9, not matter what 'x' is, is a multiple of 9.  ALL multiples of 9, when you add the digits together, give a result of 9.  It's an old trick that I used to teach my 7th grade math classes when teaching them tricks to know what a given number is divisible by.

Multiples of 9: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90, 99......

Apologies to all where the above is obvious.

Doesn't work; 9x+9=xxxxxxxxx+9; that' just goofy

9x is not xxxxxxxxx.  It IS 9 times whatever x is.  Remember your algebra?

Hello Walt,

Sorry, I don't much like Algebra, Brussel Sprouts or any other of the crucifying vegtables

BTW, when I add up the numbers from 18, I gets 9, so everything is right again...go figure

John,  I kinda suspected something was up because I have always thought of you as a sharp cookie.  No, I have not read that.

Sorry to insult you!
