Wondered how many of you 3-railers might have worked out a map for your model railroad empire. Just for fun, like the "realistic operation" fans do.
Anyone recognize this one?

Don't need one the trains depart and arrive at the basement
I'd like to make one. Would anyone care to suggest computer software that can be used for such a project? (I use a MAC.)
Ace;
That is great, Love the whimsy in it too.
I'm still working the new Track plan so I'll have to see how I can work one out.
Does the map show the late John Allen's erstwhile Gorre & Daphetid?
No to a map! Haven't needed one to find my favorite place in my basement. All I need to do is go downstairs! However, I do not have a circular set anymore through some creative switches on my part my train goes back and forth without my having to change it's direction.

Depends on what you are looking for in an end product. Pages, The GIMP, GraphicConverter are all things I'd use for image manipulation and desktop publishing.
That would be my guess too, but Ace has strategically cropped it so as not to give it away.
As for my railroad, Google maps pretty much covers it. No whimsey involved.
I could do one, AFTER I get the computer track plan I was using, to be practical in
reality.....uh, the radii it says I can use are too wide for the room available for the curves on this peninsula...
Excellent question, Ace. I love maps. I had one for my HO layout. It was a fictional connector in West Virginia. I will make a map for my O gauge layout after I make the plan and get started on the layout. I may even start on the map if I am waiting too long for the second daughter to move out and vacate 'my train room'
My trains chase their tail when running.Don't need a map.Nick
I suppose I could modify this one, it almost has that look. (page 2) I could add the never to happen connector from North Pole to CN RR or Y & WP.
When I first started my layout I didn't, but now I have to due to the division I model.
Ace - I think this is a great idea and suggestion. When you more creative types figure out easy ways to do it, please share it with us.

Wife sez if we don't get the accumulation of 'stuff' under control, we'll need to draw a map just to FIND the layout!!
The map at the beginning of this post is from the 1985 Carl Fallberg book, "Fiddletown & Copperopolis". It's a book of cartoons about a fictional and eccentric narrow-gauge shortline.
John Armstrong's map of his Canandaigua Southern showed "Post-cataclysmic Northeastern through-freight routes". New York City is not shown on the map. I wonder what kind of story he had for that?
My point all along is, these kinds of imaginings can enhance a model railroad scenario. I'm still working on "stories" for my own various layouts.

I have been aware of the book on the F&C probably for almost as long as it has been in print. It has been one of those things I have thought would be nice to read, but there is always something else to buy or do.
I do have some information on John Armstrong's CS which I picked up at an open house at his home many years ago. Some may also be in one of the books he wrote. Very interesting guy, full of wit.
John Allen made a map of his G&D and also corresponded with other modelers about their fictional railroads back in the send your correspondences via a 5 cent stamp days. Some of that is printed in the Lynn Wescott book about John Allen.
I too would like to draw a map, come up with some fictional characters and stories, etcetera, but that will have to wait until retirement. I can't even get enough time to finish a ceiling level railroad around a 12 x 12 room.
