Do YOU have more trains than shelfs or ......

I am not planning on creating a museum.  I do have some items on shelves but there will be no more shelves, if it doesn't see layout time it goes, if I find I want (not need) something else, 2 items leave the house.

If you keep doing that.  Pretty soon you will have nothing.   1 in 2 out.   LOL

More trains than shelves. More trains than layout to run them on. Can't stop buying.......

I feel like I am about that bad.  Basement layout is in a 14X16 room with shelves all around enough for 28 complete train sets and that is nothing but a scratch of the surface.  Under my layout looks exactly like this guys, my garage has two walls of cabinets full of mostly trains, and then my small 9X21 attic space above the garage is also full of both trains and a lot of car parts.  I have most of the interior from my 63 Falcon, and 67 Mustang up there along with everything from my 72 911 except the engine and the shell which is at a restorer currently.  Honestly, I have a plan to build a second layout up there and have actually built a good solid platform around the perimeter in the rafters but it is not insulated yet, and the peak is about 5 ft 10 down the center.  It needs some dedicated upgrades to really make it a feasible layout space that can be used actively. Heck, I used to have boxes of trains at my 78 year old moms house in her garage, but I've pulled most of that back except I still have the 67 Mustang over there.  If I had a 40X60 shop mysteriously show up outside, I think it would instantly be full!

I look at some of these pictures, realize how much buying those amounts of trains cost, and don't think I could ever convince myself to spend that much on toys.

I think I'm too practical. Many of you are not. My hats off to you .

Just installed another hopefully enough  shelf on the other side.. total  installed are (9) 1x6's 8 foot long  tomorrow    too tired to go from the basement to the attic to see...  Daniel ...PS.... what I learned here I just might put some under the layout !!!    DAniel

I found Gilly's GS shelving in the landfill and put it up.

Somehow I doubt that! The landfill would have sorted through all the recyclables before dumping into the pit.

I always have more trains than I can build shelves.  I keep lessor quality, spare or duplicate or train gear I do not want to run in storage.  The extra trains are under the layout and in boxes, stored. 

I have a stack of straight 1 x 4s ready for my next and last section of shelves as I am out of wall space.  Then the culling will get serious.  You can see my shelf design below.  They are free standing but have a few screws to the wall studs and have been moved to several houses and rooms.

I've filled up my wall, but it also has the trains that belong to my kids on them.  Even if I put shelves in their rooms I have more then will fit on my layout and one wall.  So I'm going to fill up a 2nd wall.  Well, that was the plan all along, just wanted to get the layout done first so that the shelves don't get in the way (The layout is against the 2nd wall.) if I want to add scenery (Like a tunnel.).  I know then I'll have shelf space for all my trains with room to spare, but my drive to buy has really burned out.  Not much new that I want, and being unemployed for 6 months with a family to feed and mortgage to pay really does wonders on GAS.

Starting to look like what I had in mind. It will be nice to have some trains stored near the layout, rather than the other end of the house.

I have more trains than sense and more of both than shelves.

What, me worry?

Certainly won’t hold a ton, but it gives me some storage closer to my layout.

I am like Elliot. I have no shelves so everything is crammed under the tables. Last week I found a TCA K Line 5 unit spline set I bought in 1993 and never had it out of the box along with so much other stuff that has never seen daylight........Paul

i will never buy or make shelves. Everything is rotated around on the tracks. The stored items will go back in their original packaging to be safe. 

Shelving might make sense if you have a huge building like a barn or a hobby shop.
