The nice thing about creating your own world with your layout is you can do it anyway you like. I do not want to, nor feel the need to spend a lot of money on static grass, etc. Being retired the cost of a museum quality layout is out my price range. My layout is a duck under that is 45’ long, 16.5’ wide and 5’ out from the wall with an open center. I do believe in keeping things scale with my engines, rolling stock, buildings and other layout items. I always felt that you can’t get too picky if your train has three rails. I am opting for some nice grass looking indoor/outdoor carpet for grass, I will make scale roads and crossings with the proper signals. We have a cat that loves the layout and I do not want to put anything that might be toxic on the layout just in case she decides to pull a Godzilla and eat the scenery. Are you a full out scale modeler with museum quality everything or do you like a mix of the museum with a little bit of the whimsey toy trains thrown in?
