I have a 4-6-0 (repainted CP) and the new 4-6-2 with sound (soon to be repainted CNR)....I am sold on this lower-tech brand. Smoke production is moderate, and the new ones with sounds sound great! Never had to send a Williams or Williams by Bachmann in for repairs. I usually buy Santa Fe, as they are black and easy to repaint the cabs and tender sides. Highly recommended, and not too expensive.
I also bought a 4-6-0 this summer, and it's become one of my favorites. It pulls everything I want it to. About the smoke output: I agree it is modest, and it is also different from any other steamer I have. Rather than puffing or going straight up, it kind of curls down along the stack (except when idling).
A few weeks ago I was at the little choo choo in spencer n.c.They had one of bachmann new 4-6-2.It looked real sharp and would be at home ahead a passenger train or a fast mail trace. And even a freight ever now and then. There are pictures of this type of locomotive pulling freight.I will wait on my tax refund to get one.Do you know if any body has posted this locomotive in action on youtube?
I have the ten-wheeler which looks like a branch-line engine, which means it would have served in every capacity, freight, passenger, switching, log trains,....once a year prairie grain box movements, whatever. I was disappointed when the Mikado was dropped, and would like that or a Consolidation of similar branchline appearance, but one that was maybe Baldwin or USRA, and/or widely used by various railroads, be offered. (since the Mikado was dropped, the Pacific was a surprise, and one I did not welcome)
I have several WBB steam engines.....a 4-6-0, two 4-6-4 O27 Hudsons, a 2-8-4, and a girls 2-6-4. Two have been converted to TMCC with ERR electronics and the other three remain conventional.
I've had no problems with any of them.
