Guys,

I just figure I'd ask since we're still in Winter weather, does anybody know how to model a snow bank such as would be seen on either side of the road in Maine? I know from visiting cousins who live there that every year around this time of year, they pile their snow by the side of the road.

I have used chunks of Plaster of Paris to replicate snow banks.  Get a small board or a piece of cardboard with some wax paper on top.  Take some mixed Plaster of Paris on a spoon (as much as you want) and just let it drop down on the wax paper, making a mound.  Do this several times to get the mound you like.  After it dries, you can do one of two things: let it alone because it is already white or paint it with a type of white paint that has some glitter in it (this can be acquired at a craft store).  When the lighting falls on the snow bank, you will notice the sparkle just like fresh driven snow.  The wax paper will keep the plaster from adhering to the cardboard and you will have a flat bottom for your snow bank when placing it on your platform.

I might add that I have used foam to make boulders (not snow banks) and then painted them.  The problem is that I had to glue them down because, unlike Plaster of Paris, there was no weight to them, being made from foam.  If you do decide to use foam, make sure it has a flat bottom.  If your train goes by and it's not glued down, you might experience a flying snow bank.
