Does milk car require a separate operating section?

Got one of the 1998 Lionel "Cola Unloading Cars" which is identical to the milk car.

I have a piece of operating track but it looks like there are two tabs that will interfere with mounting the operating track section into the milk car receiving base slot. These are the two tabs that hold the removable side pieces of "ballast" to the center section of the operating track.

I can trim the two tabs off of the operating track section, but then the removable side pieces won't fit back on as tightly as they did from the factory.

Should I trim the tabs and dedicate this operating track section to the milk car unloading platform?
