I have 6 engines that all have the white (MTH NICAD model 1605), they are all the white ones in my engines (look like a standard 9v battery, not the blue AA shape).
I called a large online hobby center and they only carry the green NIMH, so I called my local hobby shop and they said they carry both kinds but when I got there they only had the green 8.4v or the blue AA type (maybe that aa shape was a 2.4v... Since I was already there I went ahead and bought two of the green ones. They were more or less clueless about the white model 1605 NICAD...
My NICAD's are about ten years old and have never been changed, although the trains sometimes stop on the track between blocks or maybe its track connections w/less conductivity when running 3 mph... Not sure if the batteries are bad in the engines but after ten years I would imagine they need to be changed, I read that the battery helps make the trains run smoother so thought to change them all out.
Anyway, an MTH article identifies the pros and cons of NICAD vs NIMH and I think I'm more suitable for the NICAD. Do they still make a MTH 1605? Even on the MTH part finder they only have the green one 50-1008 type. Does MTH even make a NICAD 8.4v battery anymore?
