I'm an old Lionel guy, with not much experience with MTH. I have an older MTH Premier Series ATSF Northern steam loco. It has the road number 2921. I have no box or instruction sheet for it. How do I know if it is equipped with ProtoSound? ProtoSound II? Here is a photo of the underside. Any help or pointers would be most appreciated. Thank you.

I guess it does. http://mthtrains.com/20-3015-1
I have one of these also. It's Proto 1 - replace the MTH battery with a BCR and save yourself some aggravation. Depending on your transformer, you may or may not hear sound. Won't hear them with modern Lionel 135 and 180 power bricks for sure. Will definitely hear them with any MTH transformer. Not sure about ZW, KW, or Z transformers.

Thanks guys, appreciate your info. I guess a follow up question would be: Did MTH make this model with and without PRotoSounds?
I own this same locomotive - made by MTH around 1998. It has Proto-Sound 1 which means it runs conventional AC mode only and has no "cruise-control." It was made only with PS-1.

One of the quick tells, if it has not been messed with, is the remote coil coupler on tender. That would need the protosound 1 or a QSI type sound system.
Mechanical coupler means DCRU and just whistle or horn card.
Same for PS-2/3 versus LocoSounds for newer engines. G
I would put in a new MTH green battery before putting power to it.

And make sure to charge the battery as well before trying to run. Half an hour or so on the tracks with power will give you a safety buffer.
Thanks to all for your help. Much appreciated!
BTW I have a ZW and KW and have no issues with the sounds on my Proto 1 engines.
