Have chance to purchase a Doodlebug set. Anyone run one on layouts? Best ones.

I have a C&NW PS1 doodlebug that I bought new. I don't have the trailer - sorta wish I did. The battery was replaced with a BCR. It has nice start-up sounds, and once underway engine sounds ramp up with an increase in throttle.
It gets run several times a year without any problems. My layout has 042 and 031 curves and switches, it navigates them nicely.
I have no reservations about recommending it to you.
I too have the Baltimore and Ohio PS 2.0 version from MTH, the sound is very unique as are the looks. I have / had plans for a loop for light passenger service, with and occasional local freight car or two.
I have two, a B&0 with just a horn and a UP with PS-2. The B&O runs great. The one with PS-2 was DOA and unfortunately I neglected to test it when I first got it, so when I finally got around to running it, it was off warranty. I eventually scrounged a 5v PS-2 motherboard off a junker and now it runs nicely too. I like the sound set on the PS-2 version - sounds more like a big semi or bus starting up than a train.
The B&O with a horn is for sale, if anyone is interested.
I have the PS 1 unit in Santa Fe. I run it with an REA boxcar or a heavyweight coach.

I have the MTH one, and the MTH Sperry car which will be converted "back" into one,
and a running kit built American Standard Car Co. version. Other Walthers gas electric kits await work. Mine are all conventional, so no running problems with them,
except for the Sperry car...dunno if I will render it conventional. I am a fan of these,
so will run several as trains, including switching and bringing home one car.
I have the MTH RK PRR doodlebug that I upgraded from PS1 to PS2. Runs great and I love the station stops and the callout of the stations. It's a great one for those of us with smaller layouts. You can add one freight car or one passenger car and you have a train! I like it with a woodside 40' freight car.
I run my PRR 4666 with the MTH club R50 club refer they had a few years ago. Or place the Weaver B60 and RPO cars behind it.
I repainted a Santa Fe bug to Milwaukee Road, added two heavy weights and made a local out of them. Don

I have this one too, works fine.
Coming from the south of England, I tend to avoid letting Doodlebugs get anywhere near my layout.
I'd love one in in NYC or NYO&W livery!

I have the MTH in PRR which has the station stop programming capability. I also have catenary for looks purposes only.
Fantastic runner and visitors love it as it provide a rarely seen otherwise look at a piece of train history as attested to by the photos on this link.
I run a PS/2 B&O one at our modular shows. It gets some looks as it's not your usual piece of RR equipment running around.
I have the early Santa Fe version. I too changed out the battery for a BCR. I run it a few times a year. I like the sound of it. Paul
I have the 3rd Rail PRR Brill unit and an American Std unit that re-kitted itself in transit to be rebuilt. I also have two Walthers units: one powered that has its electrics to be solved and an unpowered one that will receive modified Railking power.
I have the MTH PRR Brill PS2 #4666. Bought it at a local show for a steal. One of my favorite engines to run.
My mother-in-law's nickname as a child was Doodlebug. I have never tried to run her on my layout though.
I have the PS-1 equipped Santa Fe one. I got it because my grandpa had built a 7.5" gauge one and I grew up riding behind it. It's a fun little one to run around on my carpet loop. It's out of service right now because the windshield fell down, again. I really need to figure out how to keep it up, super glue isn't cutting it for some reason.
