The USGS has made available current and historical topographical maps doe the entire US (including Alaska and Hawaii.  There are many scales and dates available.  You can obtain them from this link:

The maps are big.  They are in a pdf format so any of the readers will work.  The only problem is the  map name may not be what one would expect.

I have used thiis service and it is great.  I was surprised at how many maps had changed names over the years.  It is slow to use because of the file size and the only way to find what you are looking to downtown load many years of a map you know do get the names of adjacent maps as various times.  These are scans of paper maps out of filing cabinets. Many of them have pencile notes in the margins, which may help with name changes.

Thank you very much.  Great, useful and usable information.

I like that you used the home of the East Broad Top Railroad for your image.  The only minor fault I find with USGS is the use of the word "Abandoned."  None of the EBT mainline from Mount Union to Robertsdale/Woodvale has been abandoned.  In fact, the stretch of track over which "ABANDONED" is printed has been cleared and used for handcar and speeder trips.  The track may be out of service but so far it has not been abandoned.

Anyhow, great to know that these maps are available.  This is a fantastic resource.
