Good evening all,

I’m about to start on another proto 3 conversion for a steam locomotive for my 2 rail layout.  I have not attempted to do any downloading of the sound files off the MTH website, nor have I tried to upload any into my locos.  I’ve done a few of the P3 conversions already and have been listening to the generic P3 steam/diesel sounds… Are there any tricks in the downloading and uploading of these sound files?  Will any computer work?  How do I get the computer to “talk” to my DCS TIU?

thank you in advance!

Rick

you can use windows 10 or apple but most people use windows 10, you must also download the driver for usb communication for your MTH service loader to talk to your computer to be able to download the sound file , com port 2 3 4 depends what your computer uses ! see below for attached usb driver !

ps you will also need 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm cord for setting up tiu to transfer files and usb to RS 232 cord to connect computer for usb communication !

p.s I would recommend you have an email sometimes ogrforum members can't help you without an email !.

  • Thank you Alan for the information. I don’t believe I have ever posted on this form so that is all new and will heed your advice on adding my email address.  I believe I may have one of those cables already in my inventory so I will take a look at it. I was just curious how the TIU receives the signal from my laptop.

  • thank you again for the information and wish me luck. I will be starting the conversion shortly.

The only way to use an IOS (Apple) computer is using Windows emulation, the DCS Consumer Loader is strictly a Windows application.

You only need the 3.5mm stereo cable is to update the software in the TIU, it's not required for loading sound or chain files.

If you're using a PS/3 steam upgrade kit, the chain files should already be loaded, so you just have to load a PS/2 3V or PS/3 sound file to match your locomotive type.

If you have a Windows 10 computer, the stock USB drivers work for a Rev. L TIU.  If you're using an earlier TIU, you'll need a computer with a serial port or a USB to Serial adapter.
