Now here's a question for those who were there...and that's why I'm asking over here instead of the model forums.  This is for you folks who remember the Big Alco V16 sound from the mid '50s, and more specifically...the Alco 244H engine used in the RSD7 by AT&SF, C&O, and PRR.  This sound was close to the later 251 V16 sound, but subtly different.  This is, of course, nothing like the Alco V12 244 sound that everyone is familiar with ...and rendered by everyone in the model train sound business.  I'm looking to duplicate the original 244H sound for an O gauge Atlas C&O Dragon Lady Alco.  In prototype railroading today, the closest sound I can find is the GE Amtrak P Units when they're parked next to the waiting room in Chicago Union. It's a heavy bass four cycle roar / chug sound...and that's the way I remember the RSD7s when they ran.  No commercial chip I've heard thus far really does this justice, and I'm thankful this O gauge machine has room for lots of speaker potential to help generate the effect.  Thus far the best I've heard to duplicate the effect is the sound traxx dual GE FDL sound chip. There are likely others better here, but I haven't found 'em yet.  Anyone know of a chip that really captures these beasties correctly ??? Thanks !

jaygee:  Not familiar with those exact Alco locos you're referring to, but if MTH has made models of any of them, they should have the exact sounds on file.  If you contact Roy at MTH, who is their sound engineer, you could discuss those sounds, where to record them, on what engines they would be correct and other subtleties.   But remember that any sound is limited by the size of the speaker and the speaker compartment, as well as the sound system being used.  You might not get quite the same bass sounds that the real engine emanates.  But MTH is always trying to improve their sound library for future use.

Thanks for the ideas.  I have considered using MTH PS 3.0 as an operating system for this machine...provided it will run correctly in DC conventional when needed.  I have a ton of space for speakers in the hoods and fuel tank of this monster chooch, so I'm thinking it can be pulled off, at least to some degree.  The Alco V16 251 sounds are pretty close, but everyone has a slightly different flavor, from the samples I've heard thus far.  There is even enough room here to add a smoke generator, and further capture the Big Alco effect !
