Thank you, thank you, thank you! Can't thank you enough for your very kind comments.
But listen up, guys, please:
GEORGE LASLEY is the modeling guru genius here, not me. GEORGE LASLEY should get 98% of the credit for the beauty of my layout, not me. George is a master craftsman.
It's true that the concepts for the scenes are mine, as are track and layout design, the idea for scene compartmentalization using the contoured painted backdrops, and the complex operational details, including control systems and CTC panels. That's my area of expertise.
But I really SUCK at modeling details. I always have, and I'm not getting any better. I can visualize the scenes to go with the layout track design, but I cannot build any of the scenery detail aside from sticking in trees and shrubs. All that realism manifested at 1:48 scale is due to the artistry of GEORGE LASLEY! As you can see, he is truly a master.
For instance, George scratchbuilt each of those tiny pushcarts on the mine tracks that lead to and from the mine elevator underground. Those are for carting tools and the mine timbers to keep the tunnel roofs in the mine from caving in. Each of the tiny mine timbers were cut, dried, and whittled for quarter inch scale accuracy from Ligustrum branches. Subtle details like transformers and wiring into the structures are all prototypically correct for the current and amperage required. And so on.
Point is, without George, my layout would lack the realism you see in these and other photos. I think OGR should do a feature article on George Lasley and his work. My layout and Jerry Davis' 2-rail layout in Cary (9 miles west of downtown Raleigh) both have enough George Lasley-crafted detail in them for a yearlong series of craftsman articles.
I deeply appreciate your compliments, but please especially thank George Lasley. I only own the layout. He made it come to life!
Best,
