We had an adventure on the Cascade Canyon Winter Train last week.  A ballast spreader plowing snow ahead of us (shown below) derailed, and the engine crew used the "butterfly" rerailers on the K-28 locomotive to get it back on track.    Despite the hour delay, we had a great time.  The crew was very friendly and informative.

Additional outbound stops included Rockwood Station, a water stop, and a stop to pickup a MOW spreader crew member.  Our layover at Cascade Canyon was shortened to 1/2 hour and the train turned on a Wye there.

What are the different types of rerailers called?  I think the butterfly is also know as a straddle rerailer. These would be an interesting detail to add to a steam engine tender.

Anyone know how they keep these backwoods water tanks from freezing?
