Hello, I have a small question. Can I swap in a 3 position for a 2 poistion e-unit in a SW2 #8770 switcher? And some op couplers, if anyone has part numbers for these 2 ideas, I appreciate the help.

Not unless you reverse it's polarity.
The dual field coils are wires in opposite polarity- that's how they got 2 directions previously.
You would have to go to the frame side of the connection, disconnect one of the 2 colors there, connect the other end of that coil to frame ground, and then the coils would be in parallel. Even then you are changing the field strength ratio compared to the armature and so in theory that would change motor operation.
Added diagram using Rob's as a baseline- to be clear I'm not recommending this, just showing what one could do.

It would lower the current in the field, so any improvement would be negligible, non-existent, or negative.
