Here's a short video sound and speed step check of the Sunset E7.  The DCC system is Lenz; no adjustments have been made to the decoder or the DCC system. First 2 minutes are the start-up sequence and engine idle sounds then notching through speed steps 1-5.

Here are my observations.

  • The engine sound is the best that I've heard (I'm sure that the Soundtraxx advocates will be all over this one).  The sounds are clear and without echo.  Could use a little more low end though.
  • As it comes from the factory, the volume is too high for my taste.  That can be fixed.
  • Movement is barely perceptible at speed step 1 - that's good.
  • As it comes from the factory, the momentum is too high for my taste.  That can be adjusted too.
  • Motor noise at speed step 21 is noticeable and intrudes on the sound system.  Speed step 21 is about as fast as I could ever conceive of running this loco on my layout.
  • My unit's headlight is brighter in reverse than in forward??? Maybe the factory reversed the headlight and backup light???
  • I forgot to record the horn and bell on the video.  The horn is clear, but thin sounding.  The bell is low, muddy and not acceptable.  The latter does not bother me as I will use it very little.  It can probably be reprogrammed too.

All in all, I'm pleased with this loco and will buy another.

Yes, I said the best ENGINE sound that I have heard.  Most prime movers sound like they were recorded inside of a muffled box.  The engine sounds are muddy and indistinct.  The OSI sound is clear and open and lacking unnatural reverberation. A good prime mover sound is important to me as this is what you will hear constantly. The low end isn't bad, I'd just like more of it. It's probably due to the choice of speaker and/or the speaker enclosure. When I open the loco I will know more.  In addition the QSI decoders have lots of adjustments so there may be an equalizer somewhere that I may be able to adjust to improve the low-end performance.

The horn and bell sounds are not the best, but they can be replaced.  Only the bell I rated as unacceptable. I spoke to the QSI representative at Springfield about the Titan and he said that it can be reprogrammed with the Quantum programmer.  The Titan is designed to hold many different sound sets, so it's possible another horn and/or bell is hiding in there somewhere.

Mike, Sunset's documentation says that the volume and decoder reset can be done with the magnetic wand.  Possibly some other functions, but they do not say.

TT

Yea magnetic wand.  Looking forward to playing with them.

Cool but hmm cause for concern?  A properly engineered and discrete magnetic pickup tool could possibly pose a risk.  Much like how I used to have a remote IR program on my Palm Treo which allowed be to turn off TV's in stores, restaurants and public spaces.
