I went to a train show yesterday, and had a pretty good find. I bought a Lionel Southern Pacific GP-9, in the Black Widow colors, New in Box,never run, and TMCC for $120.

I don't have my TMCC wired to the holiday layout that we are getting ready to take down so I had to try in conventional - signal sounds mode. The Horn and Bell sounds were awesome, but there is no diesel rev. I could not remember if this was supposed to work in TMCC only or if it would come on in conventional mode?

I have Signal Sounds Steamers that have chuff in the SS's mode. Can anyone clarify?

Seems like your in signal sounds, move switch to Full sounds. Don't forget the battery.

In signal sounds mode the bell and whistle/ horn should be all the works. With the switch in railsounds mode the engine sounds should work as well as the bell and whistle.

If this is a TMCC version then move switch to get diesel sounds. But there also were Signal Sound engines, and upgradeables engines early on, that only had bell and whistle. G

Look inside, if it only has a single board for sound, it's Signal Sounds, if it has two boards, it's RailSounds.

I moved the switch to Full, and all sounds are working now. I guess the signal sounds are for the one that do not want to run in TMCC.

Signal sounds are for folks that only want whistle/bell, and not the other sounds that come with the package.

That makes the train silent unless you ask for one of those.
