I recently purchased a layout and the trains from  an acquaintance   whose husband passed away several years ago.  He had started the layout in the late nineties and must have lost interest around 2002 or 2003.  There were around 20 or so MTH engines with photo one installed.  I have installed new batteries in 18 so far which required taking the shells off diesels or steam tenders.  During this process, I realized what great engineering went into these engines that are now 20 or so years old.

The moldings and castings are very crisp,  add on detail and paint / graphics are all first rate. The fasteners are all well made.  Wiring is neat and well managed.  Shells come off easily without doing damage to the internal wiring or connections.  And despite all the negativity one hears about the electronics,  16 ran perfectly after new battery was installed.  The other 2 also ran perfectly after using the reset chip set (this may have happened because I tried to run without changing the battery first).

I well remember being impressed back in the mid nineties with the MTH offerings but revisiting them 20 years later and still being impressed deserves to be commented on.  Mike and his company and suppliers certainly had (and still do have) their act together.

I agree with you that the early MTH or Railking engines are well made for it time and I just purchased the NOS Railking NW-2 switcher # 30-2157-1.  I was impressed in how much care was taken in when assembling this engine flawless paint, no screw hole post cracks, gears perfect just about everything is still new after all it is 17 years old and the metal castings is all good, no zinc pests anywhere.  This engine was made in Korea in 1999 era.  After I installed the first BCR from J&W it was defective but then I send it back to get a replacement J&W BCR then the engine works really well which surprises me as I was expecting the PS-1 to get messed up because of the first BCR being defective but didn't affect it all !!! The only thing that didn't pass the test of time was the traction tires, all 4 of them failed.  I had a spare of 20 tires for it so after installing 4 fresh ones then quickly became my favorite Railking engine because it is running so perfectly well for it age.  Then my Z4000 (5 years old) started having pot controller problems go figure as this transformer is made in Thailand in 2011.  Do you still have the MRC 270 watt transformer that you wanted 90 dollars for it ?

I really liked the old MTH engines when you could get them in conventional.

I have a few and they look good and run good.  They seem to work with any power supply and don't have clangs of death or need expensive kits to unlock them or battery substitutes.

Tiffany it is my understanding that the older MRC power supplies wont work with Proto 1.

The output of that MRC power supply is not a sine wave.  

I have never tired it but that is what I have heard.

That is another reason I so far have avoided Proto 1 engines.

BTW I have that power supply and I like it a lot.
